Now let me start by correcting the title to this blog…you see food is not ‘healthy’, people are, it should read ‘my favourite nutritious snacks’. Food is nutritious and as such it’s meant to nourish our body. Though not all foods are made equal sort of speak! So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that if food is made from a plant it’s going to be more nutritious than if it’s made in a plant. Or like Dr Hyman says; “if it was grown on a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, avoid it. If it has a label stay away. As my grandmother said, ‘Buy fresh, eat fresh’.” Eating a balanced diet, full of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, lean protein, whole grains and pulses, all which are derived from nature, will enhance your body’s function and health.
So here I will share with you 3 of my favourite nutritious snacks:
1 Fruit, yes fruit you heard right. Even though fruit sometimes is not seen in a positive light, it holds loads of nutritional value. Of course, like anything else, always eat fruit in moderation, as part of a balanced diet. Enjoy summer fruits like berries in summer which are full of antioxidants and citrus fruits in winter which are a power source of vitamin C. Fruits also have fibre which makes them easier to digest and assist with blood sugar regulation.
2 Nuts. Love leave nuts, all of them! Snack on nuts such as cashews which have a mood-stabilizing vitamin that can assist with low mood and anxiety. Walnuts, one of my favourites; are high in omega 3, the good fat! If you have time it’s recommended that you activate the darker nuts such as walnuts, brazil nuts, almonds so that they are easier to digest. Try to eat all nuts in their raw form for maximum nutritional absorption.
3 Hummus. Making your own hummus is easy and so nutritious. All you need are chickpeas, garlic, salt, tahini, cumin, lemon juice and a little water. Chickpeas are packed with vitamins, minerals and protein. Eat the hummus with carrot stinks for a delicious morning or afternoon treat.
